European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism
Apostolos Tzitzikostas is the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, a role he assumed on December 1, 2024. A seasoned Greek politician and regional leader, he has served as Governor of Central Macedonia since 2014, winning re-election in 2019 and 2023 with over 60% of the vote. He also served as President of the Association of Greek Regions, a position he was re-elected to unanimously in 2024.
Tzitzikostas began his career in the private sector, founding an organic dairy company in Thessaloniki in 2002. He entered national politics in 2007 as a Member of the Hellenic Parliament with Nea Demokratia, where he served on several key committees, including Foreign Affairs, Financial Affairs, and European Union matters.
He has been an active member of the European Committee of the Regions since 2015, previously serving as its President (2020–2022) and First Vice-President (2022–2024).
Tzitzikostas holds a BA in Political Science and International Politics from Georgetown University and a Master's in European Public Policy from University College London. He is fluent in English and French and frequently contributes to international publications.
